Farewell to a 'Good Guy'

July 30, 2017

Sad news with the passing of yet another Carcoar identity. John Thompson was born into a farming family and spent his early years growing up in and around Cowra. He became a household name in Sydney in the mid sixties when he became one of the first “Good Guys” at 2SM along with Mike Walsh and Bob Rogers and later as one of the “1110 men” at Sydney's 2UW, one of the most innovative radio stations in Australia during the mid 1960's through to the early 1970s. John and a range of others took Top 40 radio to a new level becoming the most popular DJ's on radio. His cutting edge music show, Thompson Underground, gave many artists their breakthrough. John also worked in the 2UE newsroom and later for the BBC World Service in the UK and Europe. He was also station manager of Young's 2LF for a time.

Away from the microphone John was modest about his achievements and never lost his ability to connect with people. In recent years he and his wife moved to Carcoar where they undertook the restoration of the old Catholic Presbytery. John's humour, intelligence and marvellous voice will be greatly missed. On behalf of the Carcoar community we extend our deepest sympathy to Vanessa and their family during this difficult time.
